Let’s heat up this winter with some curry chicken! I will admit that this curry chicken recipe isn’t exactly from scratch, but it is easy and tasty. I pared this with a smooth Pale Ale to compliment the flavor and cancel out some of the spice.
This week’s beer is Samuel Adam’s Crystal Pale Ale. It’s a mainstream beer pretending to be a small time craft brew, but I do enjoy their seasonal selection. The bottle claims that it’s “crisp with citrus hop notes and an Earthy backbone” and “crisp, bright and bold”.
Style: A pale ale with 5.3% Alc. Vol.
Taste and Body: It’s light with citrus notes and a good bit of hops. Easy to drink when you just want to relax.
Color: Light Amber
Aroma: Citrus and hops (though it is difficult to smell while cooking curry).
Level of Recommendation: While by itself I could definitely taste the citrus and hops, it was a little difficult to make out the earthy flavors. I recommend it if you like light beers with good flavor and not a whole lot of bite.
Alright, alright fine, so I don’t make my curry from scratch, but this is a good meal if you need something quick and have a Trader Joe’s nearby.
What you’ll need:
For the curry –
- 1 jar of Trader Joe’s Curry Simmer Sauce (or any other curry sauce of your choosing, I’ve had a few good ones from Target too). The ingredients in the sauce I used is:
- Tomato puree, tomato, onions, canola oil, ginger, garlic, sea salt, coriander, cumin, turmeric, paprika, lemon juice concentrate, red pepper, cinnamon, cloves
- A cup of water
- Chicken cubed (can be substituted with fish or tofu)
Extras – Optional
I start cutting up the chicken and then following the cooking directions on the jar. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Make rice or heat up the bread while cooking the curry.
The Trader Joe’s Curry Simmer Sauce has a medium level of spice to it, which goes well with this beer. The Crystal Pale Ale negates some of the heat and the curry helps to bring out the Earthy flavors that weren’t as noticeable before. I find that they compliment each other well.
Level of Recommendation: Earthy spice make everything nice. Sorry I had to rhyme right there. I recommend for another quick meal. If you’re hungry and want to relax this is a great combination to kick off your weekend with before heading out with friends.
