Summer Blonde Ale & Fresh Salsa

I’ve been wanting to try making my own salsa for a while. So after making tacos last week, I thought I might as well try making salsa this week. So I grabbed a summer blonde ale and went to work.

The Beer:

River Horse Summer Blonde Ale has a great picture of a hippopotamus on the bottle. That was definitely the first thing I noticed about this beer, which is appropriate for the name. didn’t see any descriptions on the bottle for this beer, so I went in completely blind not knowing what to expect.

June 13 2016 002Style: A summer blonde ale with 4.5% alc./vol.

Color: I’d describe it as a dark blonde, almost honey colored.

Aroma: Fruity with a floral undertone

Taste: This beer is light with a small bite to it right in the middle. It’s smooth, yet crisp. It’s like eating a golden apple in late spring without the apple flavor.

Level of Recommendation: Good for the warm weather and when you want something light, but full of flavor.

The Food:

What you’ll need: June 13 2016 004

  • 1 tomato
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 jalapeño
  • Plenty of cilantro
  • 1/2 of a small onion
  • 1 lime (for the juice)
  • A little bit of olive oil

Chop up and remove the seeds from the tomato and jalapeno. If you want a little extra bite to the salsa put some seeds off to the side. Chop up the garlic, cilantro, and onion. Place everything into the food processor.

Slice the lime up so that it’s easy to get the juice. Squeeze the lime directly into the food processor. Drizzle in some olive oil. If you have a food processor that allows liquids to drizzle in while chopping, add the olive oil while you blend everything.

Serve with corn chips.

The Pairing:

June 13 2016 005The salsa that I made has a very strong and fresh flavor to it. It works with the lighter flavors of this ale and is great at keeping the garlic flavors in check. The onion and jalapenos help bring out more spices in the beer. It’s a fun combination without going crazy.

Level of Recommendation: Good for a small get together with close friends and family.
