Hard Cider

Turkey Avocado Salad With Cider

Fall is just around the corner and kids are heading back to school. That means it’s almost apple season (also pumpkin season, but I’m holding off a little while for that one). So I wanted to kick off the season with some hard cider.

But it still really hot outside and I want something cool and light. How about a refreshing turkey and avocado salad? Something light and refreshing to kick off the changing of the seasons.

The Hard Cider:

I occasionally drink beverages other than beer and hard cider is a nice alternative when I want something a little sweet.  This week’s Hard Cider is Angry Orchard’s Summer Honey. Is it light enough to withstand the summer heat?

28 August 2016 004Style: A hard cider with 5% alc./vol.

Color: Pale

Aroma: Like honey

Taste: It has a lightly tart and sweet flavor.

Level of Recommendation: I’d recommend this hard cider for those really hot days when you need something a little sweet, but still light.

The Food:

What you’ll need: 28 August 2016 002

  • Mixed greens
  • 1/4 of an avocado, diced
  • Turkey breast (I used deli, but leftovers are a good option too)
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Olive Oil
  • Raspberry balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and pepper (optional)

Rinse and dry the mixed greens. Dice up the avocado, turkey breast, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Toss together and drizzle on the olive oil and raspberry balsamic vinegar. Sprinkle a couple of salt and pepper if you so desire.

The Pairing:

28 August 2016 007The light sweetness of the cider works well with the bitterness of the greens. The avocado adds just a touch of creaminess, while the turkey and fresh veggies keep everything light. This is a great pairing for lunch or dinner on really hot days.

Level of Recommendation: Have this pairing when you want something light and filling.
